Review: The Relenting, Lisa Gill



Genre-bending poet/essayist/performance artist Lisa Gill is a rape and incest survivor living with multiple sclerosis. As if this were insufficient fodder for a swelling body of work that includes three books of poetry and a forthcoming graphic memoir, last autumn she spent an evening in her two-room cabin where she lives alone in rural New Mexico facing off with a diamondback rattler. That evening gave rise to Gill’s latest and most playful book to date. The Relenting: A Play of Sorts is a lyric re-imagining of that primal encounter between Snake and the self-modeled character Gill calls simply “Woman.”
